Financial advice has enough acronyms to make alphabet soup look underqualified.

AFSL and authorised representatives

An Australian Financial Services Licence, or AFSL, allows a business to provide financial services. An individual adviser may be authorised under a licensee to provide advice.

When checking an adviser, look at both the person and the licensee behind them.

CFP and professional designations

CFP stands for Certified Financial Planner. It is a professional designation that can signal additional training and standards, but it should be considered alongside experience, authorisation, and fit.

Letters are useful. They are not the whole story.

The Financial Advisers Register

The register helps you check qualifications, training, work history, registration status, and what products an adviser can advise on.

Use it before relying on claims made in a brochure or website.

What really matters

Credentials matter most when paired with clear communication, transparent fees, relevant experience, and advice that is tailored to you.

A well-qualified adviser should also be able to explain things without hiding behind the qualifications.

If you are unsure what an adviser’s credentials mean, ask them to explain. A good professional will make it simple.
